1999 S80 Brake Pedal Stiff in Cold Weather

Post by bluezerby »

I've got a 1999 S80 and in the cold winter mornings the brake petal is stiff. If I pump it a 5 or 6 times it loosens up and is fine the rest of the day. Is my booster going bad? Or is there something else I should check out?

Thanks in advance.

I found this post on the MVS site for other models. I'll have to check it out to see if this fix works for my S80.

No brakes when cold

That has variable cam timing on exhaust cam for cold start emissions. That together with retarding timing is used for as long as 90 seconds to reduce emissions but it also greatly reduces intake manifold vacuum level.
Has it not always done this? Is this a new to you car?

Does it do this if you start it and wait 90 seconds before you put it in gear ?

how cold?

if VERY cold, maybe there is water in the fluid that might be freezing?

flush the lines with new fluid...see if it helps

First thing as mentioned new brake oil and a good flush, just take care if it is to cold take great care with the brake bleeders, I would recommend the night before the flush spray some WD40.
