96-97 850 no A-B yes OBDII port - miles readable by Yazaki?

Post by esl_97_850_T5 »

Ultimate goal: Trying to determine if there are inherent limits in the final 2 years of 850 and first year of S70/V70/C70/XC70 on which instrument clusters (Yazaki, VDO, SVC70) can have the vehicle mileage read from them.

1. For 850 with no A-B and with an OBDII connector -- is mileage readable from a Yazaki cluster?

Presuming an owner had either a USA 96 850 or a European 96 850 that has no A-B but does have an OBDII connector, can the mileage be read from a Yazaki instrument cluster? Always yes? Usually yes? Usually no? Always no? Depends? If depends, then depends on what?

Prefer to hear from dealers or independents who have successfully read the mileage from one or more of these 6 groups:

- USA/Canada 96-97 850,
- USA/Canada 98 S70/V70/C70/XC70,
- European 95-96 850,
- European 97 S70/V70/C70/XC70,
- elsewhere 95?-97? 850,
- elsewhere 97?-98? S70/V70/C70/XC70,

preferably tens or hundreds or thousands of times, but have discovered that there are certain classes of those autos which can not have their mileage read from the cluster.

In particular, I'm curious if the Yazaki cluster is a class which either doesn't maintain the mileage and/or can not have the mileage read.

2. If Yazaki clusters did not have the mileage retrieval capability...
2a. Were most USA/Canada 96-97 850 VDO?
2b. In Europe, are the 95-96 850 mostly VDO or mostly Yazaki?
2c. Elsewhere in the globe, are the last 2 years of 850 mostly VDO or mostly Yazaki?

3. Any other clues as to why someone might claim the mileage could not be read from those cars -- besides the oft-repeated claim that the mileage can only be read from the COMBI using a dealer tool -- if the claimed "unable to read mileage" car can have its COMBI DTCs read/cleared via Vol-FCR Full or Brick-Diag Free?

I ma going to say that the Yazaki doesn't have the capability. The Volvo service literature is specific to the VDO cluster and it is silent with regard to the Yazaki.

Here is what the service manual has:
Combi Instrument 1.pdf

Combi Instrument 2.pdf
(238.42 KiB) Downloaded 245 times
On the plus side the Yazaki didn't have the odometer gear problem that plagues the VDOs so it isn't as necessary. My bet is that 95% + of the 850s in the US have the VDO cluster. I have only seen one Yazaki in the junkyard and that was out of hundreds of cars.
