2003 xc70 random severe car vibration

Post by Dempsy »

Driving on the highway when all of a sudden I get a vibration throughout my who car it made my dash shake so I tap the brakes to see if it's in my wheels but nothing so I exit the highway and when I hit 60 kph it stops and then wouldn't do it again. It literally feels like all my tires come unbalanced and the whole car shakes like I have muddier tires on it. Mechanic said it was the driver front cv joint so I replaced the whole axle and had replaced the other side last year so that's all good. Again on the highway it does it again. This didn't start till I took it in to get my rear brake calipers checked and one was seized so it was replaced and new brakes on back with one new rotor. I also had my transmission flushed in the same service. This happens at random and as I slow down when it happens, it seems the vibration gets louder and then just stops and then it drives like a dream and then does it again. It makes no sense mechanically to me. I have to take it back in to the pro. My mechanic trained in Sweden but even he had it wrong when he said it was the cv joint. Anyone ever heard of this??

I would check the brake calipers I had a similar issue in 2001 jeep grand cherokee turned out to be front caliper seizing up

or don't want to scare you but you could have ruined your transmission with that flush I had it happened to me twice that after flush tranny would go bad on 2 different volvo's ( symptoms were different then yours one of them had a vibration going through the car while it was shifting from 2 to 3rd until tranny given up fully)

Assuming there is not snow/ice stuck in the wheel spikes

At the center of each wheel, there is a 14mm bolt that secures the drive shaft. these are known to get loose, check them out.

inspect also the front control arm bushing for advanced wear

otherwise, make sure the wheel bolts front and rear are secured, and bring the car to a garage to check for loose/broken suspension bolts, for safety

Are the lug bolts all snug?

Also, some of the AWD Volvos can be driven with the rear drive shaft removed. That would tell you if that component is the cause.
