1997 S70 T5 Engine light staying on

Post by gardee »

Its my first post so hi to all.We own a S70 T5 with 265000km. Lately the light with an 'A' came on,believe its the engine light.I took the car to two different mechanics which gave me to different diagnostic codes, the first being P0102 and the second Evap-valve.efi-541 . Symptoms noted :heavy fuel consumption, slight lack in power,at times the car stalls at robots. NB! the original MAF was changed 2 years ago. Please advise as where to begin. Thanks

The A light is actually the Greek letter Lambda so it is typically called the Lambda Light or, in the USA, the Check Engine Light.

P0102 is a MAF sensor code and a bad MAF sensor will cause all of the problems that you describe. They typically last a heck of a lot longer than 2 years unless it didn't get replaced with an OEM Bosch sensor the last time. There are also a number of "rebuilt" MAF sensors on the market that typically don't work well either. Sometimes you can clean the MAF sensor and it will work better but be very careful. Use an aerosol MAF cleaner and just spray it onto the sensor element and let it dry. Do not scrub it or even touch it or it can be ruined.

The EVAP code is strictly an emissions code and really doesn't change the performance of the car so deal with the MAF sensor first.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Need to order the OEM MAF sensor,so its going to take time before i can report back on the fix.
Back here in Africa Volvo spares are real scarce.
Will keep you posted !

Thanks once again guys.
I ordered the part,should be here today,HOPEFULLY !
One last question before leaving : is it simple to install the MAF , or should i take it to a workshop ?
If its a simple home installation , is there something i should take care off not to do or touch.
Regards

Just don't touch the elements inside the plastic.Don't even look at it.

After installation, clear the code with a scan tool or just remove negative battery cable for 15min to reset adaptives.

Hi to all from the sunny skies of Africa.
Installed the new MAF sensor, reset the the lights and took the car for a 20km drive. The light didn't re-appaer and drives better.Hopefully everything remains normal !
Thumbs up for the priceless advice.

ABS LIGHT ON - Hi guys, just when i thought i could smile again, the ABS light came on . Since installing the new BOSCH MAF sensor i've driven 40km. Today on my usual trip, the light popped up. Could it be associated with the previous problem ( MAF sensor ) . Kindly advise .

The MAF sensor error and the ABS problems are not related beyond the chances are that you moved the wiring harness to the ABS module in the process of replacing the MAF sensor.

1996 and on ABS modules have a 100% failure rate due to the way the joints on the PC board are soldered. We have a guy here that rebuilds the modules for a very reasonable price but that may or may not work out for you since you are halfway around the world from the US. If you can solder, or know someone that is good at soldering, they can be repaired without sending them off to a shop. I wrote up "how to" guide here:

https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... 6827#46827

There are several pages of comments with some additional tips that go beyond the original posting. It may or may not be a logistical problem but the site member that does the repairs has a website here:

https://www.midwest-abs.com/ABS_Modules.php

The site member is Matty Moo if you need to try to contact him through the site private message function.

The original flaw with the modules is due to a manufacturing problem and once they are properly repaired they should pretty much last forever.

Thanks again for the post, guess i need to find someone this side that's good at soldering.
Can the car be driven in this state i.e with the light on?Planning on going on a 2000km round trip with the vehicle, but if its advisable not too,i will have to find an alternate solution. :(
