Can anyone tell me what this component is. It is located on the firewall (see pic). The insulation on the wires leading into this component has come off and I need to tape or use liquid tape to seal them.

Yes, the wires can be removes from both connector housings. You will find that the connector housing has snap fit part that retains the wire connectors. A small screw driver will come in handy to unsnap this.

In the 1987 740 Turbo, this type of connector connects the engine wiring harness to the dashboard gauges and is located behind the driver side strut tower near the firewall.
