1998 V70 XC SC-816. I need a radio code!

Post by lumitrac »

Hi there,

recently purchased a nice V70 XC and the first thing out of the seller's mouth regarding it's issues was a radio code needing to be done. I havent had much help at the local dealer (they seemed put out by my request), and was wondering if perhaps someone here who has dealer relations might be able to help me.

Heres a shot of the radio sticker. If any other info is needed, Id be happy to provide it. Image

Try a couple of things.

First, look the radio over carefully for a 4 digit number that is handwritten. It is typically just done with a Sharpie but I have seen more clever variations with whiteout painted over it. If you can find such a handwritten number then chances are that is the radio code.

Secondly, if you can't find it on the radio itself, call the dealership parts counter and also have your VIN number handy. They should be able to look it up for you either with the radio numbers or the VIN number but the VIN number assumes that the radio is original to the car. Many of the radios have been swapped out at some point so the code that matches the VIN may not match the radio. The numbers on the radio will always work though.

They may require some sort of proof of ownership but they typically don't. I find that it is easier if my wife calls and uses her "Sweet Darling" voice.

Sill-Terhar Volvo in Broomfield, CO (link below) gave me my code over the phone with the info from the sticker on top. The PO had replaced the radio a few months before I purchased the car and I told them that. They did not hesitate to give me the code.

If you're lucky the card that has the 4 digit code will still be in a pocket in the owner's manual folder. It's also common for people to write the code somewhere, such as on the sun visor mirror. The key is that it will be a 4 number code.

I usually write the radio code in the owners manual in one of the pictures of the radio faceplate exactly where the code would be displayed if you entered the numbers. I may not be unique in that practice. I'd give the owner's manual a pretty thorough going over just in case. I also always write the code on the top of the radio itself. That saves all kinds of hassles later. With the dawn of the digital age, iPods, satellite radio, Pandora and Spotify are people really stealing car stereos these days?
