Re: An unsolicited offer

Post by matthew1 »

Instead of locking, I'll put the following:
No asking Tim "how much" or "can you find..." in this thread. PM him.
Those posts will be ignored and deleted, meaning this thread will be actively curated.

But it's good to keep it open in the sense that additional thoughts may appear that can flush out more answers or ideas for this. Perhaps another pick-n-puller beside Robert may chime in with helpful advice for Tim or the parts-needy.

Tim, this is very nice of you. I think you should charge a small fee, maybe based on ability to pay. Just my 2¢.

I get stuck with a lot of parts. People is "desperate" need and "will pay later today", then I grab it since I'm there, then never hear from them again. I've even had 1 person stiff me on a part, "please ship it and I'll see if it helps. If it does, I'll pay for it, if it doesn't, I'll ship it back". Wouldn't matter if I could afford it.

At any rate, do protect yourself.

I appreciate what both of you are saying, and like I said earlier, making an open offer like this is not something I have ever been inclined to do before, and if it starts getting abused I will definitely make my feelings known. Normally this is just something I do for my "shop friends"; this community seems to have the right mentality, I am offering this as a friend, and expect to be treated as such; sometimes its a couple of bucks, sometimes it a six pack, sometimes its just a "thanks for saving my butt"

What really prompted me to do this was the remark about tipping and etiquette and the couple of threads on rounded drain plugs (and a seat net). In as much as none of us "like" the parts costs to maintain these cars, pretty much every thread I have read here the owners understand that they possess what was/is considered a European luxury vehicle, and just because its old does not mean it gets any cheaper - if anything it gets more expensive because good parts become scarce and that gets downright scary.
One of my "friends" recently destroyed the oil pan on his 740i, at first he didn't want to take me up on the offer, but after realizing that his options were 1. OEM pan for ~$150 on E-bay 2. trying to kludge weld it back together, or 3. let me handle it for him - $35 later perfect used OEM pan along with new OEM gasket. Turns out the cheapest solution was also the best solution. The headaches I read about with drain plugs make me think the same thing - costs me $35 to solve your problem - you've dealt with it long enough to know the scope of the problem, so with that in mind what is my solution worth?

Quite simply, 99.9% of the MVS forum members KNOW what the service I am offering is worth, and what the part they will be getting is worth; what they choose to pay for it (either monetarily or with a public expression of gratitude) is between them and there conscience.

Just so EVERYONE understands, This is for MVS members - you make a request, I am going to search your posts - I have no problem helping "friends" solve their problems either with parts or advice (amd if you PM for my phone number to talk or be walked through something you will get it); but if you want to pan your problem off to me completely I do have a shop and that's a whole 'nother ball of wax. Generally, (but not always) when it comes to shipping stuff, I do it just like an E-bay transaction - send a Paypal payment, and you'll have tracking info within 1 business day. You will get my home and shop address, as well as my shop and cell numbers - some say that's too much to offer, but I put it all on the table and expect the same.

Quite simply as far as the money goes - this is really seems like a solid community; I don't think there is much tolerance for pissing in the pool you play in...I doubt anyone here wants to be the cause of something like this dying.

To Matt, Steve, and the other Mods - Thank you for what you have built, it is a class act
To Robert and the many others - thank you for supporting something truly worthy

For as long as I have been a member, I have obtained a lot of helpful information and instructions for repairs on my Volvo cars and have therefore done more reading than posting up to now. But am feeling compelled to express my gratitude to this thread in particular for I am deeply impressed. When I lived in the Phoenix area, I would seek out Volvo enthusiasts and service specialists like myself. I am now known as "Dan, the Zen Volvo man" in Cottonwood, Sedona areas for I have almost exclusively owned and serviced my Volvo cars since 1983. Recently, a friend wrecked my slightly modified vintage 1987 240 wagon, so there are quite a few useable parts that I had installed that I would like to put into the hands of another proud owner/enthusiast like myself. It was the most reliable vehicle I had ever owned in that series. So, admittedly, I had a lot of love for it. It had some "mild" HP boosting and cooling system modifications. Like Timmy, this is not a business for me, so I am not doing this "for the money" nor "some quick bucks." My line of thinking is that if I just junk this car, no one would really know the treasure of such valuable parts except by chance of junkyard hunting. I would feel a deeper sense of sentimental satisfaction by having these parts go on a worthy Volvo that has been as well maintained as mine had been. Does that sound a little "sappy?" I have already done the pullin' of the parts I want to get rid of, so do the PM thing if anyone's interested and we'll work out the details..

Many thanks for letting me share this and kudos to all and best wishes for continuing success to Matthew and all supporters.

Black (or any color) rear spoiler for 2001-2006 V-70 (Mine is a T-5, but it makes no difference from what I have read).

Thanks! Sim
