1993 850. ECC fan resistor bypass.

Post by Willis-Bass »

Has anybody done a temp by pass of the heater fan resistor on an early ECC car? Is it feasible by directly powering fan? I don't care if if only runs on high speed as I plan to sell the car in the next few weeks. I have replaced the resistor once with a used one and got about nine months out of it. It is too cold to go to the junk yard and I do not want to invest in a new resistor.

I did it for a winter until I found a used controller. The relay only controls the amount of ground, by changing this the blower speed is control. I made a jumper with a on/off switch that I manually turn on or off has needed. I also found to never, ever used the auto setting it burned 2 ECC's before I discover this!

If you've had two motor controllers fail, may have a failing blower motor.
But if you're planning to sell, bypassing the controller and grounding the
motor through a switch is certainly a quick and dirty option.

As for the AUTO mode killing other components? I doubt it.
If there was some kind of issue, it would be all over the boards.
It's much more likely that your '98's ECC had some other problem.

Since I stop using the auto mode, the controller is been working fine for 4 years.
The blower motor was almost new when the controllers gave me the ghost!

I'm gonna go out on a limb and guess
that those were both used controllers?
