'99 S70 Base, N/A, Auto -- Augmenting the Fleet

Added to the herd today with a '99 S70, NA, auto. Original owner, 108K miles. Needs a few things but it wasn't expensive so I have some cash to make it right. Clearly needs a PCV service -- failed the inflating glove test -- and it also has the original white dot throttle body. When I scanned it, it came up with no codes and the check engine light was not illuminated. The former owner did tell me, however, that she had it "slow scanned" and it returned a throttle body code and a couple other issues (antenna ring and something else, I can't recall just now).

At speeds under 65 the car rides like it is on rails. Above about 75-80 the engine starts to sputter and lose power. It also loses power if I give it gas while climbing a hill on the highway at speeds greater than 65 mph.

I am planning on replacing the throttle body in any event, but are those high speed symptoms consistent with throttle body trouble? The sputtering did not illuminate the check engine light.

No dash lights of any kind. I poked around a bit in Don's ETS Room, which I should have done before posting. Classic ETM failure symptoms. No need to respond to this thread. I've got my answer. Thanks.

The ETB on the NA is a lot nicer to do than the turbo, that's for sure. Post a pic too when you get a chance!!

I've been buzzing both of mine from a ALB to NYC and BOS this year, great fun.

Sounds more like coil pack or spark plug failure.

If you have it at high revs in any gear under load are the symptoms similar? Tried cleaning the ETM? Also remove the rubber bellows leading to the ETM and check that the throttle flap can be pushed fully closed by hand without binding then springs back easily. If it binds the problem is either a very dirty throat bore or clearance problem at the magnet/armature.

Oh yeah, the cruise control appears to be out as well. Could that be ETM-related? Mike, anyone?

Even the slightest error with the throttle module will disable the cruise control. That may or may not ultimately be the cruise control problem but it is high on the list. What did you scan it with? You really need VIDA/DICE for the '99 and on cars.

Yeah, any error with ETM or ABS will kill cruise on ME7

My coils were fine to 120k, then a jump start killed 2 of them. I replaced all and saved the three good ones. I did post a thread about measuring the resistances on known to be good coils.
