1995 850 Had power steering till I did not....

Post by cmarcoux »

I was turning around in a parking lot and my steering pump went,,,, loudly. Which was funny because I was in the mall parking lot and a lot of heads turned when it started to make a real loud wwwiiiirrrrrrrr sound while I was turning my wheels tiring to figure out if it was my car or not I think it was the fourth turn and say good by.... No more power steering and the pump is making a lot of noise while the car is idling. Is this bad for the belt?

Looking for a good write-up. I am going to change the belt too is there anything else I should add to the list???

Are you sure the pump is boned? I'd add fluid and see if it stays in there and makes the sound go away. I'd also not run the engine until I got some juice in there. Probably not good to have the pump running unlubricated.

Cracked reservoirs are not uncommon, and I had a hose mysteriously come loose once. Best to avoid inflicting damage before you know that damage has already been done.

Yes your half right I filled it up to high full (3 Ounces) of steering fluid drove a around 4 miles and checked it it had gone down a bit. 2 hours later there is a puddle in the drive way and the fluid is just missing the bottom of the low line. The steering still had a sound half as loud as before (no where close as silent as it was) but still loud when it was filled I'm guessing this hole or what ever must be large to loss fluid that fast.

Can you see a trail of fluid on the hoses or in the engine bay? Perhaps you can find where it's leaking from and correct it.

def. see if it is leaking on the rack or at the hose/reserv. Some swear by lucas power steering leak stop but I have never used it.

Replace whatever that is leaking first. If the pump still makes noise afterward, replace the pump as well.

Just bad luck longer tube that goes into the steering has a leak around the bolt the tube may have rusted right through. The short one looks even worse. Does anyone know the part numbers for these 2 Tubes I have no idea what they are called. Oh (side thought) does anyone know where the steering rack part number is? I was looking for it and did not see it.
