'99 S70 NA, Base - ETM Advice Sought

Post by E Showell »

My S70 is believed to have ETM issues and is on the original Volvo white label one. Although toying with a Xemodex rebuild ($509) or picking up a Xemodex unit on the used market (a bit of a crapshoot on compatibility), I am also considering replacing the ETM with a Yellow Label Volvo unit of the used variety -- which can be had in the $120 range. Cost is a factor.

Has anybody faced with a similar choice in the past gone with the yellow label unit? If so, what's your long-term experience been?

Additionally, if I am going for either a Xemodex or a yellow label unit, does anyone know off the top whether the "347" or "344" unit is the appropriate one (last 3 digits of the part number) for a '99 S70 non-turbo, fwd?

Thanks

The S70s whether turbo or not use a 8644347 or 9186793 (if original white label)

The 8644346 was also in use for these models but are rare and always white label. The part number was superceded to 36001822 by Volvo about 3 years ago however Volvo has just run out of stock in 2014 of new TBs and is now selling a refurbished unit with part number 36050563 which can be an old white label with new stickers and rebuilt in Italy by Magnetti Marelli.

The build date of the unit is located on the aluminium on a round stamp with year and month.

The TBs ending in 44 or 45 are programmed to NA P2 series cars but can be reprogrammed to suit any vehicle.

Looking for a plug and play solution so I'll be looking for a "347" unit. Mike -- what kind of luck have you had with the yellow label units?

They fail at the same rate as the white labels except they're newer.

Getting a 47 series won't give you an automatic match. These suit turbo and non turbo P80 V70s, S70s and turbo P2 S60s and V70s as well as turbo and non turbo S80s.

If you find one from an NA P80 S70 or V70 with the same transmission you still have about a 2 in 1 chance of matching the ETM firmware to the ECM.

Do you have a Dice unit?

I couldn't resist -- "No dice." So what I appear to be hearing is that I may just want to go with the Xemodex rebuild and be done with it?

Or get a yellow label specimen from Erie with their "Lifetime" parts guarantee and keep swapping them as they fail.

Evan
Stop with the yellow label ETM conversation, it means absolutely nothing.
All a yellow label means is that it was a replacement. It could have been a replacement in 2002, 2003 2004, etc, 7,8,10 years ago and maybe 100K miles (or more).
Unless you KNOW and TRUST the seller who knows how any miles are on it, it means nothing, there is not a single difference between those and an original white label ETM.
Mod note. Jim passed away in early 2022, his contributions to this forum are immortal, and he is missed. RIP

Yeah -- I'm catching up to you slowly, Jim. Got a deal in the works for an ARD Tuning ETM fix kit. We'll see if that handles the problem.

Yeah, Steve, that's been suggested by my neighbor --a retired factory-trained Volvo mechanic, but the lazy in me only wants to pull it once. If I have it out, I may as well do a long-term fix.
