Hah, another Triangle-area Volvo owner. I saw that one in the "processing" lot two weeks ago.

There's some good finds out there if someone hasn't got to it before you and smashed the heck out of everything. I took the climate control unit out of one of the 850's out there (I think it was green?) and sent it to someone on the forum here.

I did like seeing a car like my car before the Volvo being crushed by another. Miserable POS.

Just got back from a further adventure thru the junkyard. There was a '96 855T with about 250K miles. I wanted to share a photo of an ingenious substitute that somebody had concocted to make a replacement for the upper torque mount rubber bushing:

This car was full of interesting improvisations like that.

Just a quick post to update on my latest adventure through the junkyard. This weekend is "50% Off" at the local yard. I couldn't believe how many people were there -- the parking lot was packed with overflow parking on the grass.
They have about 6 or so 850's there now, including two with turbo.
I got a nearly new cap, rotor and wire set (dated 2011 and in good shape), a couple IAC valves (originals from '94 and '96 from cars with ~100k miles -- may be worn out), a couple of PTC valves just in case, two Evap purge valves, speakers from the rear of a wagon, an ECC duct temperature sensor, interior cabin temperature sensors for the ECC system, an ECC control unit in really good shape from a '97 with 111k miles-- don't really need it but couldn't pass it up, and various bulbs, clips, vacuum check valves, fittings, a gas fill cap, power steering reservoir cap, a plastic arm for the recirc damper -- just in case, a fuel pump relay (marked Volvo and 2011), a hub cap cover in good shape, and a nearly new camshaft position sensor. The biggest item was a plastic splash pan that was nearly perfect. The splash pan was original Volvo and dated '96 -- amazing to see so little damage on it.
All in all a great day in the yard. Total cost: super cheap... I'm too embarrassed to mention the number. :)

For our cars, those who don't do their own work, can't afford to keep 'em going or they don't make financial sense to because of age if hit with a bad trans or head gasket. The yard I frequent has a sedan that was well taken care of until??? Even the roof trims were good. some other rougher cars as well (just missed a trip computer cluster :x ) These cars are old enough to go to pick 'n pulls instead of the factory recyclers, but don't all go straight to the shredder. Get one or two "chargeable" items, and all the little stuff you can
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Had a bit of extra time yesterday afternoon and I was passing near the junkyard, so I went in to see some of the 850s and S70s. I found a couple nice items including a good idle air control valve, a couple of Volvo OEM 'green' radiator caps, some side marker lights, a tan cargo net, an air pump valve controller, and a pair of key fobs for the '94-'95 850s. In the back of one of the 850s was the Volvo tool kit including the woven cotton gloves, screwdriver handle with torx, standard and phillips bits, and 10, 11, 12, 13mm wrenches.

I also saw an improvised hose clamp holding wires to the body of the positive battery terminal. Definitely not the best way to make the repair.

That's a "how NOT To" or a DDIY on that battery cable, but it did make me feel better about some of my work...

It's a good thing the yards I frequent are at least a half hour drive.

If they were on the way home, from anywhere, I would need another storage unit.

Ha ha!! Yes, I agree... When I got home and went through my boxes, I found I already had two other IAC valves harvested during a previous trip, plus the original IAC that I took off of my car a few months ago, saved in case I need a component from it.

It can become addictive. Likewise it is good that the nearest pnp it 30 minutes away or my garage would be even more overloaded! Now trying to clean the garage by either testing items or learning what I need from something and scrapping, or selling it. I have multiple switches (headlight and dimmer in particular for S/V70) all of which I have cleaned and replaced the blown bulbs in. But why do I need 4 spares!

In my own defense, most of these items are cheap, and would be scrapped if not pulled, and who knows who may need them in the future when not available. We are preserving the past for the future!!

Oh, I have to go back to pnp to return the non-functioning starter, and on Wednesday this week they have a more you buy the more you save up to 40%. Oh, dear.........

You can never have too many IMHO!!
