I feel your pain Clifford, because this exact same thing happened to me last year. My XC had 132k miles on it at the time
I ended up installing a used engine from Erie Volvo, because I needed to have the car back on the road fast, it's my daily driver. I decided to do that because the car is otherwise in immaculate condition and I bought it to keep it for a long time. If you own the car for say 5-6 years it makes financial sense. If you don't plan to keep it, it doesn't make sense. I'm glad I went this route because the new engine is way better than the old, it has nearly 30k less on it and doesn't use or blow oil. The whole thing cost me $3700 including install and parts.
Just doing the head would have been somewhat cheaper, but I didn't have time to fool around. You need to send the head out to have it machined and stuff, and that takes time.
