OK, just to keep in on topic - I checked the Volvospeed forum and found someone else(this time in Mexico, no less) complaining of the same thing: 15 MPG(although in an 850 Turbo).

Suggestions proposed:
- vacuum leak from brittle vacuum lines
- spark plugs(again, consensus is they MUST be Volvo plugs)- must be properly gapped
Other suggestions:
- distributor cap
- rotor
- spark plug wires
- O2(oxygen) sensor
- PCV system
but I think you already checked/replaced them, right?

Hi Guys,
I just went trough my first tank in recently bought '94 850 Wagon 2.5 20V non-turbo, automatic.
My driving was mostly commuting to work (20 miles one way, mix of: morning traffic 30%, stop and go 5%, a liitle city driving 10% and normal 70 mph highway over 50%). I ended up with 19 mpg.
I think it is not bad but I was hoping for little more. I was mostly gentle with the throttle but I did try the Sport setting on the Transmission several times. The car has 130 000 miles and I have my Civic for high speeds and heavy acceleration habbits

It is pretty cold, between 30 - 40F with todays 12F but the car warms up really fast! I was pleased with that fact. With both of my other cars it takes almost double the time for full warm up.

I have a 97 850 AWD and a 98 V70 T5 which is new to me.
The T5 has a trip computer and I find with the driving I do, mostly 10 km. to work and 10 km back, it gets 11.7 liters per 100 kms over all.
The 850, which is a heavy car does about the same, and on the highway will get 10 liters per 100 KM. Sorry, don't know what that means in MPG.
I notice they are both much worse in the cold.

i wonder if our polish friend is talking about Imperial gallons as apposed to american gallons.. the imperial gallon is bigger so his mileage is even worse than 15 mpg american.

using the table below he is getting 12 mpg american if he is using the UK measure of 14... i believe he should be closer to 19.77 mpg UK in the city or 7 litres per 100 klm

I never thought of that.
I have one of those old cardboard calculator slide rule things Shell used to give away when Metric first came in, and it seems to me it says 10 l. per 100km. is equal to around 30 mpg, but I don't know if it's in U.S. or Imperial- I'll have to look.
I looked at my T5's trip meter again this morning and it's averaging 11.5 l/100 km., with the temperature of around +10 C these days.

10 litres per 100 km is approx 30 miles per imperial gallon.
