1999 V70 Front Suspension noise

Just another thought: could one or more failed engine mounts cause clunking sounds like described? Should be easy to check the mounts including the transmission mount.

I did a suspension refresh on my wagon last year, sans shocks and struts. All was fine for a day or two. Then I started hearing a clunk when going over uneven pavement. Turns out that one of the swaybar endlinks wasn't fully seated. I was able to tighten it down to where I thought it should have been good, but it wasn't because the bolt wasn't in as far as it would go. Sometimes those things can be a pain to get flush again. Just a thought.

Endlinks are what Ozark Lee also recommended checking in the link I included above. Sounds like a good place to start!

If they need tightening. do I need to unload the suspension with a jack or something?

I found it helpful to use a second jack under the control arm to get the endlink bolts right where I wanted them.

I've replaced a LOT of sway-bar end links over the years - some on Volvos, and others on just about every other kind of FWD car.

Holy cow can worn ones make a LOT of noise!

It's tough to determine if they're worn when the tires are on the ground, but with both wheels raised it's pretty easy.

Jeff -- Enlighten us. What are the telltale signs of sway-bar end links with both wheels off the ground?

Grab it in the middle and jerk it around. If the joints are worn you will hear clicking and feel movement.
