2007 xc70 knocking when turning
2007 xc70 knocking when turning
hello guys. hoping for some help. I replaced the front shocks and springs less than 3 months ago. car ran great but now I hear a single knock when I turn the steering wheel from one direction to the other. it happens a low speeds or when the car is parked. also when I make a heavy turn to the left my traction control turns off. could it be tie rods? hoping its not rack in pinion. thanks for any help

Same thing happened to my S60. After changing the shocks and springs, the sound heard when turning at low speed and while parked. The only different is the knocking sound is continuous instead of single knock. (like knock, knock, knock .... all the way when turning the steering...)

What brand parts did you use? On an old S60 I used some junk from a leading site and they made it 5k. I replaced with OEM Volvo and problem went away and car went 50k b/4 my nephew totaled it. Lesson is just b/c you recently changed them does not mean they have not failed. Other than that check your LCA, ball joints and spring seats and shocks. Failure of any of these can cause the issues you describe - or one or more of them being loose.
does it sound like a metallic knock? I still have that knock sometimes and I believe that its because the center steering shaft wasn't centered (1 side longer than the other). I found out mine wasn't centered because I asked the suspension shop if its normal (after wheel alignment) that one side having a few threads (use for adjusting alignment) and the other side has no thread left. They found out my steering shaft wasn't centered and I think it was because the previous alignment job had my center shaft adjusted due to me replacing the wrong size right outer tie rod.
@ Badruzzaman87: yours sound like the CV ball joint(s) of the front drive shafts. I had the same "knock knock knock" noise at slow turn before having my front drive shafts rebuilt. Look up on youtube, there is a guy that explained the symptoms perfectly (basically if you get that noise when you turn left then its the right side CV joint and the other way around).
