Re: 1994 850 MAF bad after cleaning K&N air filter
When I had fuel in oil, it was the injector it's self that was leaking. Not injector to manifold. It was gas into manifold. I believe I had starting issues at the time (fuel preesure would bleed down). Would not start at first try, but would start at second try. For rough idle i would look for vacuum leaks.

These cars go to normal idle very fast.
If you are having running issues while cold, I would replace the temp sensor

I'm definitely going to replace the vacuum lines. Not a hard thing to do, just something I've been putting off. I don't hear any sounds like a vacuum leak, other than the normal sound of the air intake.firestarterpro wrote:Well, still double check. If you hear any whooshing sound in while the car is running, from under the hood. Its prolly a leak...

I actually had this same problem on my 850 Turbo. That was going to be my next guess for hard starts. Only on the turbo, sometimes I couldn't get it to start for days, then it would start perfectly.rspi wrote:These cars go to normal idle very fast.

Not sure if it is something that can be done, but how would you go about finding which injector is leaking? I actually leaning more towards this being the issue with the gas in the oil. There is a very hard tick coming from injector 3, and you can feel the tick in the fuel rail. It's not a valve tick, and it only has the normal volvo clatter, no knocks.1998v70xcbill wrote:When I had fuel in oil, it was the injector it's self that was leaking. Not injector to manifold. So as an update, I put the new MAF in today and the car has been driving fine for about 2 hours. I changed the oil, and will keep a close eye on it, and see if it happens again.
I also changed all of the vacuum lines coming from the tree on the throttle body. I wasn't able to change the ones for the air pump, as I don't have a replacement T
. That will get changed shortly though. It does seem to start smoother, and holds the normal cold start RPMs for a few seconds, then drops to just above idle for a min, then idles down, and idles much smoother. There is still a little bit of hesitation coming up from a complete idle, but I noticed my intake hose is cracked/splitting in a few spots, and some of them are large. So that will get changed, and hopefully that will help. Also still going to hollow the Cat out in a few weeks.
I don't have the K&N filter in at this point, just my old paper filter.

I think the consensus of the forum is that K&N filters are perfectly safe and an effective upgrade. The key is not to over oil them. There should be an old thread somewhere discussing the cleaning procedure for the K&N's.abscate wrote:I think you will have to bite the bullet and buy a new MAF. It sure seems to be indicated bad and fro others experiences the oiled filters are known to kill them

Outside only. That's what is shown in their instructions as well:soulvoid1990 wrote:When you oil yours. Do you do both sides, or just one? I only did one side on mine (The outside obviously850 LPT wrote:I think the key is not to over oil them. I had a K&N filter in my 850 for nearly 200k and never had a problem.) And I made sure to leave it sit for about 30 minutes and then wipe the excess off very good.

Ok, so, this problem has resurfaced.
I haven't driven the car since I replaced the MAF. I did drive it for about 2 hours around town, and I had 0 problems. Went to start it this morning, as I was going to the garage to change my coolant temp sensor and my wheel bearing. The RPMs are jumping up and down from about 600-1400, doesn't stay running for more then a minute or 2 before stalling, and the cooling fan is continuing to run for about 5 minutes after shutting the car off.
I looked at my previous orders and forgot that I already replaced the coolant temp sensor 8k miles ago when I did my water pump and timing belt. I'm kind of at a loss here as to what is going on.. There are no weird noises/grindings/knocks or ticks coming from anything either.
I'm going to run to Autozone and buy some intake pipe, since mine is cracked and broken in a few spots, hope it helps!
Thanks!
