2007 S80 - Air conditioner is noisy

Hi everyone,
I have an '10 XC60 and an '07 S80 and am perplexed by the noisy air conditioners in both vehicles. When they are on, they seem to make a lot more noise that most other cars. Is this just a Volvo thing, or is it something that is ominous, foretelling a potential failure? It seems that the XC60 noise has been present since I picked the car up at the factory in Goteborg and it now has 80,000 miles on it; the S80 has 55,750 miles on the odometer.
