1998 s70 Car will not move

Post by joesmartt »

It's a 1998 S70 non-turbo auto trans. Car starts but will not move. Changed the trans fluid. The first time, it moved for approx 6 mi. The second time, it moved 2 mi. and the 3rd time I changed the fluid, 1 mi. ABS light is on. OBD2 Code is p102. A special software used by a friend of mine reported wheel sensors problems. I appreciate any feedback.

If only it were as easy as an ABS error. Unfortunately I think your transmission is shot. Before you do anything else double check the transmission fluid level. Check it with the car idling in park and check both sides of the dipstick. The dipstick can trick you into thinking the fluid level is good when it isn't, particularly just after you add fluid.

The P0102 code is a MAF sensor error code and it will not keep the car from moving, neither will wheel sensor errors. A bad MAF will cause the car to run poorly and get terrible mileage but it does not keep the transmission from working properly.

Thanks for the quick response! The fluid was extremely dirty. I changed it 3 times. I figure I've replaced 87.5% of it. The color and level are fine. Now, If I want the transmission to engage, I need to disconnect the battery for a short while. Then, it's able to shift for a short period of time. For the price of changing the transmission, I'd be better off getting another car. Thanks again!

Before sending it to the junkyard try adding back your old fluid if you still have it - might let you get another few months out of it while you look for another car. Sometimes the old fluid will contain small metal filings from the failing mesh gears in the transmission that are the only thing that it still allowing it to shift as it should.

Thank you for sharing. This is the first time I have read about someone having shifting issues after doing a drain and fill. Was you having ANY shifting issues prior to the first drain and fill?

I was driving one day. Everything was normal and suddenly, as I was about to make a left turn, the car hesitated. I had never have that kind of problem before. I realized something was wrong. I moved forward and at the 1st stop sign, it stopped. I turned the car off and restarted. I was able to get home 2 miles later after a lot of restarting. The minute I stopped for a stop sign or a red light it wouldn't move unless I restarted. At one point, I had to wait 5 mins after pushing it to the side of the road before it would restart. That's when I decided to do the 1st drain.

Have you tried to take it to a transmission shop to have it diagnosed? It could be the trans has failed (worst case) or it may be something else like corroded contacts in the TCU or a vacuum line, or something else. I'm no expert in auto trans, but we tend to look at the worst case. Those of you with more experience, is it 'normal' for a trans to fail totally like this. It is the 'hesitation' that makes me wonder if something else may be at play.

Thoughts?
