Doors locking on own - any ideas?

Post by Trevor C »

Hi everyone, new member here.

I have a '03 V70 and have been having a problem with all doors locking themselves while away from the vehicle. Also, my wife was driving the car yesterday and told me that the radio switched from AM to FM on its own (not sure if that a related issue).

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

I'd check for errors on low-speed CAN network, it could be that some module sitting on the network is dying and malforms packets on the network.

As for locking, you may have passive locking enabled for your car. Or it did not do that some time ago?
If you have questions about Volvo firmware ask me. I may know an answer :)

As mentioned, the Volvo dealer can setup the software to have the doors lock at a certain moment. Maybe the previous owner set it this way. Was the key in ignition?

On my 2003 V70, the doors do NOT lock when I take off down the street. They DO lock on the wife's 2005 S80.

Was my 03 originally programmed to auto-lock and then the PO had it programmed to NOT lock, or were the 03's NEVER programmed to auto-lock?

I personally prefer the doors to NOT lock but was just curious.

If you or your wife is accidentally pushing unlock button on the remote then the system will self re-lock in two minutes. That is done on purpose that for very reason. Handling remote as you slide into pocket or purse could result in unlocked car and theft of items.

The rotary selector on these radios I am convinced get fuzz in them and static or something is triggering unintended selections. My radio will do the same and I'll spin the knobs repeatedly and have no issues for months.

These are great suggestions! I've ner chaned any software settings and I've owned the car for 10 years. This is a new issue.

Based on your responses, my feeling is that it is some sort of software failure. I'll have it checked out and I'll report back.

Thanks again!

Please do let us know what you find, I've always wondered how the auto lock works, anyone have details? To me it seems that when the car is locked, I unlock it and get something then just leave without locking, it auto locks but if I put the key in ignition and then leave it unlocked it remains unlocked...

Also another door lock situation, probably unrelated to OP, I had was when I had to be jump started and the car immediately locked all doors, since I had the door open to communicate with the other person it didn't unlock as I left so I exited, closed the door to thank the starter, and now had a new situation :o)
