... I dove in and repaired the PNP without pulling it right out ...

The repair is basically two steps:
(1) clean out all of the old dirty grease, put new grease back in when you are done.
(2) either sand flat the copper contacts, or replace them.

@precopster...was your repair cleaning of it? or replacing it completely? ....in regard to it potentially being totally shot.

No no as I stated I didn't replace it; just followed the guude that Erik provided however I got stuck at the connector splitting stage so I did the filing/sanding of the copper contacts over the engine bay; not ideal but doable with newspaper to catch any falling pieces.
