2007 s60R test driving advice?

Post by speedyt5 »

I have had a 240, 740, and currently my longest car a 99 s70 t5. It has 271,000 miles on it and the transmission is about to go. I still may keep it but I am going to look at this car on Saturday. I haven't owned one, so I will have it inspected, but anyone got any advice?

This is (R) an expensive vehicle to maintain. As usual, check whatever you'd check buying S70 T5, plus transmission (make sure to drive couple of miles in stop&go traffic after a few good miles on a highway), plus active suspension, which is way more expensive than regular one.

vtl is correct that these can be expensive to run and if they go bad.

Check:
1) Front suspension particularly upper spring seats (they had a recall), control arm bushes (front and back), anti-sway bar end links and anti-sway bar bushes.
2) AWD system/driveline - Watch for warning lights (anti-skid service), leaks (particularly at the rear of the angle gear, and the rear differential seals. These cars are seldom driven lightly!
3) Brake vibration

Otherwise check as per any other car.

Thanks guys. I am hesitant to buy the R as I use my car all day for work. Always driving, however, I have wanted one for so many years!!

Being an R I'd look for signs of hard driving like worn outside front tires, loose suspension due to wear, excess smoke on/around tail pipe and compression.

I think its a bit expensive with that milage,
it will need a timing belt, probably struts soon which are quite expensive, they are great cars but are more expensive to maintain then a regular volvo, that is why I would suggest looking for a 2007+ T5 they have lots of power but less expensive plus looks like you are down south so awd is not that important,
don't get me wrong I love my R but with ohio roads and a stiff suspension some times i wish I got something else

It looks like a nice car. Given I see regular Volvo older and with higher miles selling around $5000, this one doesn't seem that expensive. The drivers seat doesn't show much wear, which may mean it was driven more on highway- a good point which would also help the suspension last longer.

Only drawback I see is the gas mileage. It has half the tank, yet the computer indicates 130 miles with the remaining gas. That's really low mileage. Perhaps someone had fun with it for a while after the car was sold by the original owner or it may have a gas mileage issue.

Thanks guys. The other question I have is can you put the factory R kit on it? I notice the 2007's have a different rear bumper and I never see the 07's with the kit. I love the look of the exhaust poking out of that rear valence.
