The relief cuts on the top of the pistons are perfectly normal, they are made that way, but if there are any sharp, burred, edges from places where the pistons slapped the valves that sound be filed down or sanded to get the sharp edge off of them.

I didn't realize Erie sold reconditioned heads, I though they just shipped used stuff. That is good to know since the core return freight to Clearwater can be significant.

To post pictures just press the upload attachment tab below the dialog box and select the pictures you want to post from your local computer and then press the add the file button. They need to be uploaded one at a time but you can add them all to a single post.

When you clean up the pistons (if that's the plan) you'll get a chance to see more closely. If a Scotchbrite pad gets caught on any burrs it may pay to raise pistons to the top position and run a sharp flat blade over them.

This may sound dumb, but my engine is a #b5254s, and I'm not showing this as a engine for a 99 s70 na, could anyone elaborate? I know it's a replacement but never did I think of this when ordering my parts. Should I start a new thread? Honestly I'm upset with the amount of info on 99 s70s out there, but we're determined on doing the work ourselves. Thanks everyone.

Where are you looking? 5254s is the correct designation for a '99 NA engine as far as I know.

The 1999 NA head has NO CVVT so make sure that's what you get. The 1999 turbo head has CVVT on EXHAUST.

B5254S is absolutely correcr.

In 2000MY they became B5244S and had CVVT on INTAKE.

I've owned both non turbo models in '99 and '00.
