1995 850 Turbo - P0730.. Is this death?

Post by ARMeyer27 »

I did some reading already here and saw that its incorrect gear ratio.. and can be caused by many different things, wonder if anyone can tell me about my situation if Valerie the Volvo has seen her last day :(

Car was driving fine and has been my resto project for awhile now, all of a sudden today on my drive home i noticed that at highway speed, about 65mph the rpms would be sitting calmly and then rise up to about 3k and drop back down. a small bump feeling on the rise and a small bump feeling as it fell back down. It did this about 3 times in the 10 miles till i was home. I then took the car out for a 50 mile round trip drive, did it about 4-5 times on the way there, and then did it 2 times on the way home and i got a flashing arrow. Ever since the arrow has flashed the car has absolutely ZERO power from a stop or low speeds, the engine goes and goes but it just rolls nowhere. Eventually it catches up to speed and then drives pretty normal.

Only thing i have done to the tranny since owning it is 4x drain and fills with walmart supertech dex III fluid, each time the car drove fine in between for about 250 miles. Even after the flushes the fluid is a dark grey'ish color. Never got any chunky debris on the drains.

is it done.. am i going to need a new tranny? i really hope not.. first Volvo and first turbo car.. absolutely love the thing..

Update. The car sat for approx 40 minutes after getting home while i did some reading and created this thread. I decided to go outside, clear the code with my reader and see if the power was restored, like turning off a limp mode until the code came again.

Started the car, did NOT clear the code, and it is now driving fine and normal again, but the arrow and my green/red eco or sport lights are still blinking too. Now im just confused, it drives and shifts fine, whats going on :(

I would say that you will need new transmission.
You should NEVER flush high mileage auto transmission.

Here's a post from a while back showing how to do a full fluid change per the factory service manual. It is slightly time consuming, but it works. I think it's worth a shot with the right fluid, as it is much cheaper than a transmission rebuild!

For a number of reasons I prefer Castrol Transmax Import Multi-vehicle ATF for these cars. It meets both Volvo and Aisin-Warner's specs, and it has a high hot viscosity compared to most everything else, at least everything that meets the spec and publishes data. I think it helps keep the old loose stuff happy. The newer fluids hot viscosity appears to be on a perpetual trend down.

Did you read this thread I started a few days ago -> https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=69185 ?

I have a very similar issue except instead of being stuck in 3rd like it seems you are, my transmission is gets stuck in 1st. From what I understand (read: what Ozark Lee explained to me) code 322/P0370 is often caused by the PNP switch. Cleaning or replacing the switch should be your first step.

This thread explains the removal and cleaning of the switch -> https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=29930

I would give that a try first before you give up. I just replaced my PNP switch but the 322 code came back. I'm going to try realigning the switch to see if that fixes the problem.

On a side note, with your 95 you don't need a reader to check and clear codes. You can do all of that from the OBD1 port inside the engine bay.
