Does software really need installed after update?

Do you have a failing Electronic Throttle Module? What steps to take if you do, plus the latest ETM news. Volvo 1999-2002 models only please.

Does software really need installed after update?

Why do I see so many people who hare buying used ETMs and/or XeMod online saying they just plug and played them while so many posts state that a trip to the dealer is required? I also see that XeMod's site talks about a cloning service. Very confused!

If the used ETM has software version that works with the software in ECM then it is plug n play.
Example: you happen to get an ETM that has the pre-recall software and you have a car that has had the recall reload then it will not work properly.
Cloning is either knowing the software version and loading that in new part or pulling software out of old part and then loading it in new part.
