01 s80 torque converter/overhaul(tramsmission)

I have a 01 S80 Volvo and it began to hesitate between 2-3 RPM's about a month ago, it only does it after the car is warmed up or while the AC is running mostly. My problem is that I took it to a local transmission shop and they told me I'm in need of a torque converter and a complete overhaul, they did the whole diagnostic of the transmission, which cost me 375.00. To have the work done it will cost me 2100 K, which I can't afford right now, I'm afraid that if I have them put the car back together and not get the work done right now, that it will drive worst than it did before they open the transmission. There is 125k miles on the vehicle now. Should I just go ahead an find a used trans with warranty , or just bite the bullet and pay the 2100. In my opinion the car was not driving horrible, I just wanted to get a true diagnosis as to why it was shifting. Please HELP!
