I posted this over in the S40 forum, but there does not seem to be much activity over there. I own three 70 series vehicles, looking to trade my C70 for a starter car for my son. I found an S40 at a dealer and wondered if anyone had any experiences with this particular model. I like the 70 series since I know many of their flaws and can work on them. I was curious as to how similar they are to the 40 series and if there are any major flaws with them, considering especially that this appears to be the first model year.

You may want to check out reviews on www.Cars.com. A lot of people post their issues there.

S40 is tiny, like a Honda civic.
For high school kids, go for S60, 2.5T models.
The S60 is a better car (when compared with S40).

My dad owned a 2001 S40 from new. They are not the worst car by any means, and if the price is right I would probably go for it. His made it to 354 000 Km without anything going extremely wrong. They seem to be rust prone right behind the front wheels between the wheel well and the doors, so watch for that. Also, I seem to remember there was possibly some suspension issues with the springs that got rather pricey rather quickly.

Series 300,400 in the past and s40 in the present are not "real" Volvos by all means.
1.6;1.8 16v and 1.9td;dci....are engines from Mitsubishi & Renault.Only 2.0 engines are genuine Volvo engines. That is a tradition from past...from 300 series. They are even made on Mitsubishi platform....i think it should be Colt.
They are looking nice but i never looked at it as a real Volvo. They are not even built in Sweden.
