Looking for new XC90, need advice.
Currently, my wife has a 2005 XC90 V8 with 158,000 miles. I am getting concerned about the reliability of the car as this year/engine combo are known for the CB shaft issue. There are also a few other minor issues that have me concerned. She loves the XC90, as do I, but I am a little gunshy about purchasing another due to the issues. I was hoping to get 250,000+ out of this vehicle, but with the CB shaft problem, I do not really want to take that chance. I would like to get opinions on a 2012 or newer XC90 and the issues that are associated with each setup. Are there any years which are better than others, and which years do I need to stay away from? I would prefer to buy used with under 40,000 miles.

Do you have any issues with your v8 right now? If not, I wouldn't worry about it as long as there is no water getting into the engine bay. Keep up the maintenance, and I think it should last for a lot longer than you're thinking.
If you're worried, I would just put some money aside and do some research on the CB shaft repair, so that when it goes (hopefully not) you are ready with all the info and funds.
BTW I use to live in Wichita. Its great little city! I have a good friend who is a mechanic there if you ever need to take your car for repairs.

I do have a few issues on the V8 I am working through currently. First, I have a Check Engine Light on that brings up the code for fuel rail pressure. I have changed out the fuel filter and will be moving on to the sensors next. I need to do some more reading on this site before I attack that since I am unsure if that requires a computer to sync the onboard computer to the new sensor, or if the sensor can just be replaced. Second, there is a bit of a stutter at low throttle. This seems to only happen when it needs more power on an incline or something of that nature. I can lessen or increase the throttle and it comes out of the stutter. I can also accelerate quickly and it shifts just fine. I am hoping that the fuel rail pressure fixes that issue instead of it being the transmission. Third, I have just changed out all of the accessory belt pulleys and tensioner. All of those pulleys were bad as they whined when I spun them on my finger after I pulled them out. This is my main concern as those pulleys are a non lubed bearing the same as the CB shaft bearings and I am thinking that if all the belt pulleys have went bad that the CB shaft bearings cannot be far behind. I do not know the ins and outs of the engine as well as some on this site, but that is what I am thinking. Thank you for the replies.

check out this thread for the fuel pressure related issue. I'm pretty sure your stutter issue is related to the fuel pressure code you are getting.
Good luck and let us know if you get it resolved.
