1997 V90 Product Plate/Shocks

Post by schoolhousejulie »

Hi all!

I'm new to the site, and relatively new to working on my '97 V90 (don't worry, all is done under supervision of one very skilled engineer).

I need new rear shocks for inspection. My trusted Volvo specialist has told me that they are Nivomats, but naturally, they wanted more than I can afford for them, and it is a reasonable job for me to undertake myself, so off I go with my product number. Now in all my searching, all sorts of sources tell me there's a "v" or a "w" on my product plate in the 5th line, 4th digit to denote nivomat or not, blah, blah, I understand...... but mine has an "h," which one local volvo dealer told me "just doesn't exist" and that it must be a "k" and I don't know how to read (it 100% is an "h"). I've only seen the "h" referred to on one site, but with no explanation as to what the heck it means.

Can anyone tell me?

Eyeball them there shocks...they never lie.

I don't have the Product Codes, but make sure the correct line and characters are being read correctly

What is the Product Identification Plate? Where can I find it and what does it tell me?

Did your trusted specialist actually look at them to determine that they are Nivomats? A lot of people assume that because it is a V90, that it came with Nivomats, but actually they were an option, and most don't have them.

Bear with me while I try to sort this all out of my head and onto here....

Yes, it is Nivomat. I did get a chance to jack it up and remove a wheel and take a look for myself, mostly out of curiosity, not suspicion of my mechanic, but yeah, they're Nivomats with the fiberglass leaf suspension.

So I was given the part number 444092. I was confused because on FCP there is: "not marked v" (mine is marked "H") https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... t-marked-v, then there is the "marked v" (which has 444092 listed as cross reference) https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 0-marked-v, then on IPD they have only the "marked v" which matches the FCP listing (mine have the same sticker as the one you see on the shock in their listing with 60-A92-0 on them), then there is eEuro http://www.eeuroparts.com/Parts/73441/S ... r-9173202/

I initially ordered the "marked v" from FCP because it matched the part number that my mechanic gave me. However, two days later I found out that they were unable to get me the part. The service rep at eEuro told me that their 272209 they have listed is what replaced 271897 once it became obsolete.

Now, I'm not entirely sure how that all adds up in this, the more I look at this the more confused I get:

But it still doesn't have anything about marked "H"

But I have landed on eEuro, mainly because they are the closest in terms of location and at this point I can't quite understand what the difference is anymore.

We will see at the end of the week!

Also, fun quote from my father upon first laying eyes on my suspension. First some background, he's the very proud owner of a '72 FJ40 that is in beautiful condition, a mech./elec. engineer, has loved working on cars his entire life and has spent years developing his perfect garage, but has a tortured relationship with Volvos after both his daughter have fallen in love with old bricks. Anyways! He unassumingly gets down to take a look, and things get serious/comical quick.... "What is this?! I've never seen anything like this, geeeeeez this is like a damned airplane under here! Look at all this casting work!!! What have you been driving all these years?!?"

Shock absorber kit; MARKED Y, H Volvo Part number 272220. Fits 95-97 960, 97-98 S90, and 97-98 V90.

Marked Y or H: Volvo 272220 rear shocks are not nivomats. They are stardard shock absorbers.

Okay, I see the "H," but in product images, it shows a Nivomat shock. But, looking on IPD, FCP and eEuro, all part number 272220 is a non-Nivomat https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -advantage
