2012 S60 Sunroof, auto locks, speakers--electrical problem?

Post by Morik »

Hi everyone,

I'm having a variety of problems crop up with my 2012 S60 R-Design.
I'll describe them, and a little history.

Roughly 1 year ago I scraped up the side of my car on a F150 bumper (was trying to squeeze by into a left turn lane at a light). It dented the door panels very slightly too. I haven't had this fixed yet.
Most recent issues (2b & 3 below) started ~6-8 months after this happened. I wouldn't think it is related, but wanted to mention it just in case.

1) All speakers except on the driver side front door cut out.
This has happened 4 times in 4 years rather evenly spread out. (Once in 2012, twice in 2013, once in 2014.)

Once it happens, the only way to reset it seems to be turning the car off and then back on (which solved it every time). Turning off the center panel (holding down the power button) and then turning it back on didn't work. Muting (quick press on power button) and unmuting didn't work. Changing inputs didn't work (tried various inputs, radio, ipod, bluetooth) all were cut down to just driver door speakers.

The dealership mechanics could find no issues relating to this.

2a) A couple years ago (2013?) my driver side door stopped responding to the door handle sensors. I.e., I could not auto unlock/lock with the key in my pocket using the driver side front door.
All the other doors still worked fine.

I took it to the dealership and they had to replace the whole door to get it working again (I think, may be misremembering). They weren't sure what the cause of the problem was.

2b) The same thing seems to be happening again, but it is intermittent, and it affects other doors too.
First the driver door went out and I was using the driver side rear door. Then that stopped working, but only for 1 day. The passenger side rear & front door weren't working 1 day (started working again the next).
The driver side front door cuts in and out: it will work for a few days, then not work for a few days.
The driver side rear door has been mostly working (I think there was 1 other day it wasn't and I had to dig my key out to lock/unlock).
I haven't been testing the passenger side doors after verifying they started working again.

3) Today is the first warm day where I was driving on a highway. I closed my windows & went to open the sunroof. It is behaving very oddly.

The sunroof control is a 4-way controller. The normal operation is:

Push away from me: Slide sunroof shut. If tapped it will auto close (shut all the way on its own), If held down it will slide until the control is released or the sunroof is shut.

Pull towards me: Slide sunroof open. If tapped it will auto open (slide back all the way on its own), if held down it will slide until control is released or the sunroof is all the way open.

Push up: (Slides shut if not shut) Tilt rear of sunroof up. If held down it will go until tilted up all the way, then stop.

Pull down: Tilt rear of sunroof down. If held down it will go until the sunroof is completely closed.

Today instead it is doing this:
Push away from me: Nothing
Pull toward me: Nothing
Pull down: Nothing

Push up:
If sunroof is closed, tilts it up. If held down, once it reaches the fully open position, it twiches around (i.e., the electric signal isn't cutting out like it should, and the motor is continuously engaged in trying to open it further).

If sunroof is tilted up: Tilts sunroof down until closed, then immediately starts sliding sunroof back (opening from the front, like what usually happens with the "pull towards me" contro). No auto open though. But if I continue holding it down, once the sunroof is fully slid back, it slides forward. If I keep holding it, the sunroof slides shut and tilts open in the rear, again twitching at the peak open position if I continue to hold the button.

If partially slit open/shut: Continues sliding in whatever direction it was last moving, reverses direction once slid all the way open.

So, does anyone know what might be causing this? I'm concerned that if I just take it to the dealership & describe the problems they may fix the symptoms without addressing some underlying problem causing all this. (I'm still in my 5 year free maintenance period, and would very much like to get the problem fully figured out before that expires in ~1.5 years.)

Thanks!
