2009 V70 Gearbox Linkage / transmission problem

Have a V70 t5 6 speed manual, Never had a issue with the gearbox/clutch etc. Today pulled out of my sons school, 1st Gear no problems go to grab 2nd and its gone, I can select 1st, 3rd but thats it. Its like I lost a linkage or something to that effect. Gear selection is a mess.

There was no noise and sound of anything breaking. I searched for a similar link/post but it doesn't seem that common. Any links or guides would be great to help me narrow down the issue Thanks.

Can you get 5th gear? I expect 2nd, 4th, 6th and reverse to not work.

Shift linkage is very likely to have become misaligned. It could even be as simple as the grease on the actuating point having gone missing or causing the whole linkage to bind. Have someone shift through the gears while you look at the movement of the two levers and cables. You might have to remove the airbox and assorted parts to get a clear view.

Quick update

Had a good look at the cable on top of gearbox under the battery box found this metal piece (source unknown) not allowing the cable to move freely. Reached in pulled it out, and things are back to how they should be.

anyone know where this came from?? looks like a battery bracket.

Yep, it's the battery hold down.
Here is a photos of the same in new condition.
