2005 xc70 dtc 280b, fuel pressure sensor

Post by mrscullini »

i've got about 148k on the clock. getting a radom loss of power and the revs drop. seems to happen a lot right around 2500 rpm. it will intermittently kick off a 280b & i've seen a 290b, both related to fuel pressure signals. after some searching, seems the fps may be the culprit. before dropping $100+, wanted to check on other possible causes?

You can pick up a cheap fuel pressure gauge at Harbor Freight, connect it to the test port on the injector rail, and tape the gauge to the windshield so that you can monitor the pressure while driving. See if there are any significant pressure fluctuations that coincide with the engine stuttering. A fuel pressure gauge is a handy (almost necessary) tool to have nowadays.

Also, you might check with Volvo Customer Support. Your VIN may be included in the wide-spread fuel pressure sensor recall. If so the car is allowed one free sensor replacement at a dealer.

When my wife's 05 S80 2.5T had a pressure sensor go south, they told me the VIN wasn't included in the recall. When my well-used 03 V70 (purchased used with high mileage) had the same issue they told me it WAS included in the recall but that it had already been replaced once. Sometimes you just can't win. Oddly, both cars failed within a few months of of each other. Back then the best price I could find was at Voluparts. There are black ones and gray ones. Turbos get one color - NA's get the other. I can't remember off hand which gets which, but I do remember the turbo version was slightly higher priced.

thanks guys for the info.

will pick up a fuel pressure gauge.

no freeze frames as of now. i can capture a frame, but not sure i can get it while the motor is stumbling. also, what would i be looking for? will the fuel trims be out of whack?

My Torque app catches fuel pressure so I'm hoping you'd get pressure readings when it triggers the code.

thanks. i think my scanner picks up fuel pressure. there is a data point "FRP" measured in kPa. past readings show this at 318 kPa, which is about 46 psi.

does a freeze frame capture data when the code is set? or do i need to try and capture the freeze frame when i experience the stubble?

Yes and yes. If there's no freeze frame saved, see what fuel press you have when it stumbles.

thanks for the pointer to ebay.

so the symptom seems to appear when under load, climbing a hill or accelerating up a freeway on ramp. no codes, pending or otherwise. does this help at all with diagnosis?
