2001 V70 sound in the first few meters after starting

Post by theslashy »

Hi,
i'm quite new to volvos and just bought 2001 V70 with only 70000km.

Today i heard a little scratching sound from the front, when first starting, at 20-30km/h, just once.
When i stop and let the motor run und start driving again it does not reappear.
When i stop the motor start it again and start driving i can hear it again at about the same speed.

I searched around a bit and read that this should be the ABS Self-Test. Is this true? i didn't find much info on that....

thx in advance

It is possibly the self-test; Volvos run a lot of self-tests right after starting: ABS, SRS, etc. Since you describe it as a scratching sound rather than a rapid rat-a-tat-tat or rattle sound though, it might be that you have a slightly warped brake disc or hanging brake caliper. I'd make sure you don't have any uneven wear on your brakes. If not, its probably just the self-test.

Guten Morgen, theslashy! :-)
I'm also new (S60) owner, but similar issue with me; may be your brake discs have shoulder (like my one's) and that's why the reason of noisy brake at the self-testing. Do you hear the same at hard braking?

This is ABS self-test. Car does it every time engine is started and car achieved 20 km/h.

Thank you all for your replies, i'm pretty shure now it's only the self test.
The Disks and Brake-Pads are quite new, so i'm not worried anymore...
