98 v70 non turbo burning and or leaking oil

Put some cardboard under the engine overnight after a drive. Should show you if you have a drip and, if so, where it's coming off the block. You can follow the trail up from there to the source.

I've been monitoring the oil use and keeping a record. Last oil change I put in valvoline 10w30 for older cars thinking if I had some leaking seals it might help with that. So today I checked the oil level. It is exactly one quart low after just under 2000 highway miles. I don't think I have any leaking seals since the older car oil didn't help. That seems pretty high to me since the car has only 130000 miles on it. Should I be concerned or just go to a heavier oil like 10w40. I get a big puff of blue smoke when I start the car in the morning. No blue smoke when I'm driving it. Probably valve seals. I've had other cars do this but not as much consumption as the volvo.

Switch to heavier viscosity oil.Yes you have bad valve stem seals since you have a puff of blue smoke at start-up and after prolonged idling.
10w-40 will low your oil consumption.
Add some oil in it,do not drive the car with oil level under the middle of the dipstick.

I agree with misha. This is almost surely leaky valve stem seals, and 10w-40 will help but of course not cure it.

A quart every 2,000 isn't really that bad.

Not factory fresh, but certainly nothing to panic about. Keep an eye on it and don't let the level drop too far.

I've been adding a quart every 750 or so for the last 25,000 miles and it's been fine. Planning to take care of it soon....but I've been doing that for the last 25,000 miles too, so y'know.

One quart every 2000 miles means check your oil once a month, and carry a spare quart with you at all times. My 1999 has burned at this rate since 30,000 miles....maybe a bit more later in life, but It went back down with a change to synthetic at 150000 miles.

How the first owner treated it probably determines if you the usage.

One Volvo - 1 liter/2000 miles
Other Volvo - none
VW, VW - none
BMW - 1 liter per 5000 miles
