Volvo 850 Different steering wheels.

Hey all, I have a weird question, I have always wondered why some 850's have a different steering wheel air bag cover than others, I will post some pictures to better explain my question.

Those are at least both leather wrapped. The first looks to be from an R, the second would be a standard Turbo. There is also a different T-5R wheel, and a base model wheel that is basically rubber.

1st picture is steering wheel for european market.
2nd picture is steering wheel for U.S market.

@ misha, that makes sense, didn't know that Europe would get a different wheel.

Yep.For example....U.S cars didn't have chipped keys untill '99.European had them allready in '96.

I don't mean to thread hijack, but I have a related question. I much prefer the steering wheel on the (dead tranny) '96 855t I have to that on my '98V70R. Are they safely interchangeable?

The steering wheel from 2nd picture have slightly bigger airbag in it.It is just U.S standard.Cars delivered for U.S market had the steering wheel and different airbag like in the 2nd picture.In the rest of the world they are just like in the 1st picture.They are interchangeable.

Yes, I recall the first one on a right hand drive R.

My T-5R is all black, but a suede, leather combination.

I like the European steering wheel better, might have to find one on ebay

and FYI, the bottom picture is my car!
