1998 xcv70 can I replace rear nivomats with shocks?

Post by thaedge »

My car has the rear nivomat shocks, but they also offer regular rear shocks. The pictures look like they should bolt right up into the same mounts etc, but has anyone done this. Same mounts?

They do not (bolt right up) plus you also need new springs.
Nivomat springs are matched to the shocks and are very different.

If it's price, it's cheaper to spend the money on the Nivomats

Hey JRL, can you elaborate on this? How many parts need to be changed to convert a car no standard shocks?

Would this be a lot easier on a NON AWD car?

They bolt up. You will need new springs.

My first XC was supposed to have Nivomats but the guy I bought the car from indicated that he "bought brand new shocks". They bolted up the non Nivomat versions and they didn't change the springs. With even a light load the sag was pretty horrible as was the handling. Luckily I was able to scare a set of used Nivomats up from a pick-n-pull for about $10.00 each and it was like a new car.

On a non-AWD car it is super easy, people do it all the time on the cheap:
- get regular, non-nivo mounts
- get regular shocks
- get regular springs
- get the retainer mount in the bottom off the spring when you grab the springs from the junkyard

That's it, everything bolts right up.

I may do that. Don't want to spring for new Nivomats. Need suspension all the way around.
