Sorry, I'm referring to the 'skid pan' (?) that bolts on under the car, under the engine/trans. Have to remove it to change oil filter, see underside of engine/trans.
They often leak from the seams but that is more of a weeping than a leaking.
Yes this is what we found.

What color did the leak has? ATF is red. If you are talking about leaking junction between engine and transmission, that's engine's rear seal pushed out by excessive crankcase pressure caused by clogged crankcase ventilation.

UPDATE: We ended up selling the vehicle to someone who wanted to, and had experience, to tackle trying to fix the transmission. He contacted me a few weeks later informing me that he had fixed the trans, and it's issues were due to a cracked forward clutch drum. He was able to weld the drum and used the clutches from the spare transmission we had purchased and included.

My XC '01 has a cracked first gear drum which I'm in the process of repairing. Also many of the frictions were almost down to metal. We had no reverse as a symptom. It's great to hear when people revive these units.

This sounds like very similar symptoms in our 2001 V70.
The loss of fluid was causing barely any grab in 1 st gear until speed picked up.
However in our case the transmission was heavily leaking fluid. I managed to drive it 2kms to our house where it is now "resting".
We purchased a 2004 2.5T as we loved the practicality and safety's the V70's.
Just still deciding if I attempt to get the 2001 going again to get it through rego!

Looking to do similar with a 2001 V70XC with well over 200,000 miles. An initial attempt to renew valve body was stopped due Seriously Corroded valve body cover torx screws. While sub-frame was dropped poor condition of all sub-frame/motor mounts was revealed. At least I was able to take care of those issues.

Now looking for a tranny to rebuild (Wife's car, no down time allowed)

The gobs of excess orange RTV bore witness to the fact that prior transmission work had been done (prior to my ownership). The up shot of this is that an AW55-50SN had been installed in lieu of the factory specified AW55-51SN. I do not know what the installer had to do software wise. The 50SN gave us no trouble over the 7 years we have owned the car until typical valve body issues arose. :

I'm curious too on the results of the inspection and repair of this transmission. Thanks.
