2002 Volvo s60 engine suddenly cuts off
Re: 2002 Volvo s60 engine suddenly cuts off
I used the process of elimination and started with the cleaning of the throttle body. The mechanic I used said there was a lot of trash accumulation. He cleaned the throttle and I haven't had a problem since then. Cost me $175 to do something I could have done but I'm just glad that the most annoying driving experience I've ever had is over.

I have a 2005 volvo s60. It runs great and smooth and has 143000 miles on it. One night as i turned the corner, it stalls. No check engine light...nothing. It starts right back up afterward. After some intense research and according to "justnaswer.com", it could be the crankshaft position senor ($ 40) . I will change it today and will come back to let everyone knows what happened.
I found my issue was actually really simple. I had to clean the throttle ... This issue for me had to do with idling. So when I slowed down at a corner the engine would cutoff. The bad idling was a dirty throttle...couple of years now and everything is perfect.....
I started a day with my 2004 Volvo S60 starting right up just fine then shutting down within 30 seconds, This could be repeated up to 3 times then I was forced to wait 20 minutes before it would start up again. I went on line and found people changing their MAF , Cam Position and Crank Position sensors with mixed results. Then I ran into responses where people changed their Ignition Switch Antennae Rings or banged their keys into the ignition with a screwdriver handle to some success. I spoke with a parts dealer I know and he said it sounded like a security related immobilization of the engine. I thought it seemed like my car thought it was being stolen and the key wasnt being recognized. I hit the red alarm button on my key fob setting the alarm off then turned it off and low and behold i was able to start the car off and drive with no further problem. this is probably the beginning of an ignition switch or engine immobilizer problem down the road, but at least i'm on the road for free!

30 seconds running for an immobilizer problem is longer than I recall being reported before. It usually is reported as a 1-2 second interval.
I would guess an intermittent somewhere in the ignition switch or immobiliser rather than a code problem.
Interesting coding question though - is the immob active after starting or does it decide once it allows you to run the car, it stops looking for the chip and code? I would guess this, but don't know that for certain
