1998 S70 T5 Overheats When Idling

I live in Chicago and 2 days ago as I was sitting in traffic like I do everyday on the way to work my temp gauge went up right under the 1st red line. Once I got back up to about 45 MPH the gauge dropped like a rock back to normal operating temperature. I am speculating that it may be the fan. Is there a way to test the fan or does anyone know what triggers the cooling fan.

Relay for cooling fan is attached at fan carrier.Check it's connection for corrosion or loosened wire.

Hit ac button and turn on cabin fan to see will the radiator cooling fan turn on.

It sounds like there's something going on with your fan. When the car is idling, is it turning on?
