1994 850 Stacked rod bearings
1994 850 Stacked rod bearings
I have a 1994 Volvo 850 with stacked rod bearings on cylinder 3. I replaced all the rod bearings with standard hoping the knock would go away. It didn't go away. I need to take the bottom end to a machine shop or replace with a donor bottom end. However since it is a B5252 10 valve engine and most USA 850s are B5254 20 valve engines a donor is difficult to locate in the USA. I was wondering if a B5254 bottom end would work with a B5252 top end? The specifications I see are identical except for the piston crown. Has anyone done this? I would replace the B5252 with a B5254 but there are too many differences (computer, injectors, etc).

The spec that I have makes it look like everything is the same between the B5252 and the B5254 with the exception of the head and the timing belt, but I've never seen one in person.
One odd thing is my reference shows the pistons for the B5252 having a max weight tolerance of 5 grams vs 10 grams for everything else. I don't have a piston spec, but they all probably will have the special size marking (C, D, E or G) depending on bore tolerance.
How did you manage to come across a B5252? I didn't think those were imported.

It was a Canadian 850 that made it to the USA. It appears the only difference is the max weight tolerance and I assume the difference is because of the lack of power in the 10V vs the 20v versions. Looks like if I can find a B5254 bottom end I'll use it and hope for the best. Thanks for the info.

Yeah, you'll find one without too much trouble but I figured doesn't hurt to ask.
