hello,
My v70 will reverse but not go forward. There was been an emission systems test light for ever on display. Occasionally, I would get a message i think read, reduced performance, and the car would hesitate and sometimes stall out. When restarted it would go along fine. Then the other day when started and in park the car was ramping up and down and restarting did not stop the problem. It drove okay, with slight hesitation upon acceleration from stop. It did finally stall and when restarted acted better. The next morning, kids in the car for school, was when I couldn't drive forward. The car has 212,000 on it. Hope to hear from you soon.

Just an idea, this year there were issues with the Throttle body. Others will post more about this if I'm correct. Also, perhaps check the transmission oil level, look up on Google how to properly check because it's different than checking the engine oil.

After checking level per Oragex's suggestions, tell us what color and service it has had. If it has never been changed I fear your valve body is dirty, mainly your solenoids are stuck. Plenty of information here on fixing the valve body.
Oragex's other suggestion on the ETM is also valid. Your description matches a dying ETM. Did you get any codes read?
At your miles it could actually be both problems.

Even though you may have a faulty ETM or other sensor your main concern is the transmission.
Replace the fluid with JWS 3309 compliant stuff and see if you can get forward motion. If not I fear more than just valve body issues in your case.

Okay, thanks for the feedback so far. I appreciate it. took a while but i did locate the ATF dipstick. Here is a picture of it with a cold engine not driven in a week. It looks like the fluid level is to high. It goes all the way past high to the 'do' of 'do not' It also looks pretty dark. I would need to talk to me mechanic but I think he flushed it a couple of years ago.

Look up the transmission oil checking procedure in the manual. I believe it's with engine idling, warm, and after shifting through all the gears. It's very different than your engine oil dipstick
