1997 850 What the heck is this thing?

Post by Redbox »

Hi All,

I removed the lower dash panel on my 97 850 wagon (looking for my central lock relay) when this thing came falling down. It say's "Made in USA" so I assume it isn't anything from the factory. It is wired in up above with a fuse, but all the other wires from the unit are still bundled and obviously have never been connected to anything. The unit itself wasn't attached to the frame or anything. Some kind of aftermarket alarm system or something? Anyone ever seen this? I'm assuming since it isn't fully connected, I could just remove it? No interest in an alarm if that's what it is.
I'm trying to work out some electrical issues, so anything like this makes me nervous.

Thanks for any advice.

Looks like an old school remote starter. I guess if you were curious enough and REALLY bored you could trace out the harness, but that's what it looks like to me.

That would be my guess as well but that installation looks a bit cleaner than one I removed from my son's car.

When I removed that one there were a number of wires that had been cut in the factory harness and I had to splice them back together.

That's a mess...

Looks like either an aftermarket remote starter or alarm.

I think I'll just see if I can remove it without injuring the patient. Thanks for all the feedback.
