CV Axle Recommendation

Everything on the Volvo S80. Sometimes called an "executive car", the S80 was Volvo's top-of-the-line passenger car. P2 platform.

CV Axle Recommendation

Post by rhlee222 »

Hi Everyone,
I have a 2001 S80, 2.9, 210K miles. The car still runs great and I have no desire to get rid of it. I'm in the process of replacing all the worn, original suspension parts. I hadn't planned to do CV axles but after removing the passenger side axle, I probably need to. The boots are not tore, but very worn. The bearing feels a little loose. What would you guys do in this situation? I can't afford new OEM. I would just reboot the ones I have but I'm sure the bearing that sits on the shaft will need replacing also. I have read much about aftermarket shafts, new and reman, and can't find a reliable recommendation. Thanks in advance.

I have had good luck using Axles Unlimited. They rebuild OE axles which I prefer over the cheap Chinese junk being sold in the auto parts stores. As I recall they get around $100 per axle after you send them back your old ones. They also come with a lifetime warranty - at least they used to - I doubt that policy has changed.

If there is no vibration I would just replace grease and boots. The inside bearing is a slide (tripod) bearing that may feel loose but it needs that amount of radial play. If there is axial play, ie wear, then you should feel it in a noticeable vibration upon acceleration at higher speeds so if that is absent, chances are your axle is still ok.
