Ok, so I am at the point where I can begin lapping the valves. When lapping valves, they need to move up and down with little resistance, but there must be some resistance (i.e., from valve seals) to make sure the valve is sitting as perfectly as it can without any leaks. So, my question is do the valve seals need to be installed before beginning the lapping process? Appreciate your replies!

No. If you are changing the valve guides those should be changed first but the seals don't make any difference on the valve angle through the head. I checked the valve guides and the valves in each guide have no wobble, so no need to change the guides (that makes me very happy!).

Nice pics, 5rivers. Since you have the head off and in your hands, would you mind taking a look at the exhaust stud closest to the back of the engine? (ie driver's side, possibly the one that can be seen in your 2nd photo.) Can you tell if it penetrates into an oil passage or anything like that? I've been dealing with a leak in this area, and it would be good to know what is in there. Thanks!

Oil leak on driver side near the exhaust stud: I can bet it comes from the Front Cam Seals.
See my DIY on TB SB WP overhaul, I specifically talked about tools (PVC coupler) and Corteco seals.

This stud oil leak is well documented in the other thread. Sealing the stud with permeated stopped it for a few months
