I returned the cable, got a new one, and VOL-FCR runs perfectly, at last!
Service light now is history, and I´m able to interrogate the ABS ecu to know what´s the problem.
Thanks!
What OBDII Scanner Should I Get?

Either of these work if all I want to do is activate the Trip Computer ('98 S70 GLT) and reset the Service Engine Light? Or does any place rent or loan a Volvo Scan Tool? Local auto parts store can pull codes if needed.

Volvo Scanner Recommendation:
Any OBDII scanner will read generic codes, but more specific ones, like ABS and SRS codes require something better. Cables and downloadable software sounded like as much fiddling with the laptop as with the Volvo. I tried an Autel AL619 and it could not connect with those Volvo modules, though it is advertised to. Then I tried an iCarsoft i906 for Volvo with great results: quick and easy to use on all model years and modules. I am surprised more Volvo owners don't know about these. $130 on Amazon and worth every penny:

X2 on the iCarsoft 906, got it for my two Volvos and it's perfect for my needs. Seems to be able to read all systems codes and also resets them. Also has the live data stream functionality.

I noticed that:
- neither of you specifically mentioned that you had used the iCarsoft i906 on a '96-'98 S70/V70/C70/XC70 (or other car handled by Vol-FCR),
- neither of you included such a Vol-FCR-handled car in your profiles or signatures, yet
- the OP, shiloh51933, had listed both 2004 XC70 and 1998 V70XC.
I recently researched the docs for iCarsoft i906 and came to the conclusion it probably works well on the '99 and later Volvos for reading/clearing the Volvo vendor specific codes for ABS, SRS, etc. It seems it would work well for the OP's 2004 XC70, jpg5's 2001 S60, and Cees Klumper's 2003 S80, both for standard OBDII emission diagnostics and for (at least some of) the Volvo special stuff that others use VIDA/DICE (or VADIS/VCT2000) for.
However, for the '96-'98 850/S70/V70/XC70 (and presumably for the OP's 1998 V70XC also), I couldn't find anything in the iCarsoft i906 docs to clearly say that it could read/clear the Volvo specific codes for those '96-'98 cars. To put it simply, I could not find anything in those docs that indicated the iCarsoft i906 would do what Vol-FCR can do for those cars -- Reset Service Light, read/clear codes for COMBI, ABS, SRS, AW 50-42, etc. Yes, the iCarsoft i906 can read/clear the standard OBDII emission diagnostic codes for those '96-'98 cars. But have you -- jpg5, Cees Klumper, or other iCarsoft i906 owners -- actually used the iCarsoft i906 to read/clear ABS, SRS, COMBI, or AW 50-42 codes on a USA '96-'97 850 or a USA '98 S70/V70/XC70, or used it to Reset Service Light on one of those cars? If so please provide some screen snapshots documenting as many things that the iCarsoft i906 can do that Vol-FCR can do. It sure would be nice to have a handheld device that can do what Vol-FCR can do, in addition to what a standard OBDII emission diagnostic scanner can do, along with live data and some graphing! I'd guess that if you can document that a reasonably affordable handheld device can replace Vol-FCR, then many people here would splurge and buy it.

I originally got a scanner for my '96850GLT nothing special, cant clear abs/srs/combi or aw 50-42 codes and can't reset service light. It's old and way out dated now but this iCarsoft i906 sounds decent. If I'm really stuck I bring my issues to work(Lexus Dealer) and try to sort them out.I recently researched the docs for iCarsoft i906 and came to the conclusion it probably works well on the '99 and later Volvos for reading/clearing the Volvo vendor specific codes for ABS, SRS, etc.

FYI - depending on your needs/wants, Advance Auto Parts has Actron Scanners 50% off through July 1st. While supplies last at stores and website appears to ship to home. I have not bought one yet.

I do have a 2002 C70 (not in my signature) that the icarsoft i906 works fine on, so can confirm my recommendation.
