Hi everybody, I am living in Thailand and bought a 1996 850 GLT a month ago. This car is out of list, as it is produced only for asian countries. It has a B5234S FT2 N/A 2.3 engine. It has only 97K km on it.
The problem with the car is excessive fuel consumption around 24 Lt/100km. Had a lot of codes on OBD and i cleared them all and now only have one at A2 port - 444 acceleration signal. Car runs ok, starts easily but very very little moving on idle rpm. And a little late response to throttle. It has ABS light on since i bought but nothing more. There is no OBD2 port also. Computer shows around 14Lt consumption nut when i fill the tank i see its not right...
Thinking about a leak from tank or somewhere but no smell of petrol from anywhere.
I checked the airbox trick, which there is none air thermostate on this one depending on the permanent hot weather on this country i guess.
Can this acceleration sensor cause this consumption? Or any other suggestions to check? I really need help about this, as no service here can seem to find the problem.
Thanks alot

You must replace throttle position sensor....i'm surprised how the car is running with it being bad.
If you still have diagnostic ports under the hood, the car is at the most '95.
I know about that 2.3 20v non turbo engine with 144hp(107kw) which doesn't even exist in the rest of the world. That engine was made JUST for some Asian countries.Practically...it is T5 R engine without turbo(B5234FS).

Thanks a a lot Misha.
Yes its totally same engine without a turbo. It has only old style obd port under the hood. Depending on registration papers it is 1996 but not sure how credible they are.. As it must be OBD2 in 1996.
I will soon check for TPS, hopefully i can find it. I will give an update soon as i change it.
And just for curiosity, is it possible to attach a turbo without too much modification on the engine?

What is stamped on glasses? There should be "Made in Sweden ...." and year of manufacture just under the big "Volvo" letters. On all glasses.
If we(in the rest of the world) could find some info about that engine, maybe it would be possible, but according to Volvo....that engine practically don't even exist and no data is available.
Ideally...you would need turbo and ecu(s) from t5r,assuming internals of the engine are the same as in T5r.But we don't know that for sure.

The pistons in your engine are high compression, probably 11 to 1.
The B5234T engines use 8.5 to 1 pistons.
It would be an engineering nightmare to turn this car into a turbo however there are enthusiasts out there who would toil forever.

Ok i got my advice about turbo.. Im not going to mess with it. Especially in Thailand
Now searching for TPS sensor around the retailers.. Hopefully will find one or order one. Will see if that will solve the problem.
