Hello,
We are looking to purchase another Volvo and came across an ad for a 1999 V70 Diesel with approximately 150,000 miles.
Any feedback on this particular model and year would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Rich

I don't think you'll find any feedback on this forum about 1999 V70s with diesel engine unless some Brits can offer their advice; this model wasn't sold in the USA.

It has high cool beams factor - but I would go to your local Volvo dealer with the VIN and ask them if they can support it and get parts. At least you won't need an ETB!!

It would be neat to own one of those, but you are probably going to have trouble getting it registered in California. And where would you go to buy parts?

Make sure it is a 1999 model year and not a 1998 one. Early modely require specialised diagnostic tools not readily available.
Engine was sourced from VAG and is very similar to what is found in the VW/Audi cars of this time. Parts crosscompatibility isn't given, for example water pumps and seals are different.
All 850 and X70 TDI cars have special transmissions as well so make sure it's in good condition.
Driving... it's an old diesel. Runs rough, can make clouds of black smoke, is slow and gets okay MPG. Service is key to avoid "rolling coal" which is unhealthy for engine and mileage. No particle filter was ever offered or is available.

Many years ago when I lived in Scotland, I nearly bought one of these brand new (but a very cheap 1 year old V70T5 came available). With the 5 cylinder Audi diesel and auto box, that car was quick! I actually liked the auto box in that better than the manual, it had great ratios in the trans.
Add that to 45 + mpg (UK @ 4.5l = 1 gal) it was great on fuel too. These are very popular in the UK. Try looking for guidance on the Volvo UK Club website.
Neil.

Nope....it is pretty fast. The engine came from Audi and it was 5 cyl one turbocharged. There should be NO visible smoke because it's famous 2.5TDI engine with direct injection....not like old diesel engines like Blockpartie mentioned.Blockpartie wrote:Driving... it's an old diesel. These engines were used up to 2001 when new model of v70 started. With new model, there was still 5 cylinder 2.5 turbo diesel engine, but this time Volvo developed their own common rail diesel engine. From 2001 to today,Volvo have it's own 2.5 5cyl turbocharged engine marked as D5.
Good engine...even better than newer Audi's 2.5TDI V6.Volvo never used their v6 diesel because older 5cyl inline diesel was more reliable.
