1996 850R Metalic clunk when going over bumps VIDEO

Post by dmack87 »

I was riding with my wife and noticed a metallic clunking sound when she was passing over bumps. I had recently replaced the lower engine mount by the passenger tire, but checked that and all was solid. It sounds like it is coming from the passenger side while riding in the car, but I can't be sure. I jacked it up and used a lever to actuate the suspension and didn't really hear anything similar to what I am hearing on the road. The only thing I found was when I let the car down from the jack I got shaking and popping sounds from the driver side rear tire. Check it out:

same wheel:

Bad rear shock(s)? Think this might be metallic sound on the road? Any other suggestions or methods to check these?

Thanks!

Probably the strut mount.

Get the IPD HD one or Volvo OEM. Raybestos lasted me months before they came apart. I went with aftermarket coilover so I don't have change this rubber anymore.

My guess is rear shock mounts or shock bushings are shot.

Check the trailing arm end links, where they tie on to the chassis, but your sound is almost like a broken spring or a broken sway bar the way it ratchets. I have not heard one with a sound like that.

I'd say check all the stuff these other guys said - those sounds in the video weren't too good... as for the clunk going over bumps, check the bolts holding your panels on as well, like this: https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/forums ... =1&t=70054

Took care of a ratlle and clunk which I thought were control arms/link arms. :)
