Hi I've recently purchased a 1996 Volvo 850 Wagon 2.5 10v NA with an ECC and a non functioning A/C.

I've serviced the R134A and seen if the compressor spins. Everytime I start the engine the Recycling and ac buttons flash. I've taken some codes and cleared them and the only one that reappears is 2-1-1 I've read the problem but I don't understand anything. Could someone shed some light? Summer is coming up and leather seats and heat are not a cool combo.

Thanks.

What is a 2-1-1 error and what's the description?

The 2-1-1 ECC code is Driver’s Side Damper Motor Position Sensor Circuit Open Or Shorted To Power.

The book explanation of the code is that, if it is the only code, there is a break or a short in the wiring from the controller to the damper motor. Most wiring problems are pretty easy to fix once you find the problem but finding the problem can be a challenge. In most cases the bad wiring is outwardly visible and that wire run is fairly short.

I had the "2 1 1" code too, a few years ago. There was a lot of old grease on the position sensor. I cleaned it off and all has been well for a while now. I wrote up a DIY guide here:
