2002 S60 2.4T Hydrualic Engine Mount Tutorial

Post by velorider »

Got around to replacing the hydraulic engine mounts today on my 2002 2.4T S60. The process is very similar to FCP video of the 850. However, the accessibility is slightly different. After reading lots of posts about this process I was prepared for battle. However, it was surprisingly easy. The big secret is accessing the rear mount bolt. The sway bar gets in the way. I spent an hour alone on that bolt including a trip to Sears for a 14mm swivel socket. The secret is a 14mm ¼ socket and extension. I have pictures of all the bolts access methods, otherwise follow the directions on the video. I’ve also added links back to the video with time anchor to take you directly to what I’m referring to in the video. The video performs both mount simultaneously. I’m a little more conservative so I performed the front mount completely then the rear. Hence, I don’t proceed linearly with the video.

Start to finish, 5 hours doing it solo. This included about 1 hour wasted figuring out the rear bolt. The only challenge is accessing the engine mount nuts and bolts. With that solved the job is very easy.

Tools:
3/8 socket long extensions
3/8 swivel socket adaptor
3/8 metric socket set
1/4 14mm socket And extension
jack
jack stands
zip ties

Front Mount

* Remove the engine top strut bar. This gets in the way when lifting the engine.

* Discount the plastic turbo air intake from the front and move out of the way, no need to discount from the turbo

* Remove the transmission mount connected to the subframe. video

* Lift the front of the car up, and place jack stand under the front rear subframe mounts.

* Remove the plastic shield under the car protecting/covering the oil pan

* The video shows the Ben removing the bolts from the passenger side mount that bolt to the engine. This causes the engine to sage, so instead I loosen the bolt to the subframe. Backed them out about ¾ of the way, but did not remove them. I loosened the bolts connected to the engine a ¼ turn. This should provide enough movement to lift the engine without stressing the mount.

* I removed the fan shroud. Remove the two 12mm? bolts on top, discount the 2 electrical plugs, cut the zip ties holding the electrical wires, and unhook the overflow hose running along the top. Now lift out the shroud, it might take some wiggling to pull it out. This give you a lot of extra room and will save you time trying to wiggle the mount out later.

* Like in the video using a long extension and swivel adaptor remove the top nut of the front engine mount. On the S60 a swivel socket is not required like on the 850, a standard swivel adapter is all that is required. Now with a shorter extension and no swivel adaptor remove the bottom bolt of the engine mount like in the video.

* Using a piece of wood, 2X6 is good! Please the jack under the oil pan and lift the engine just enough to remove the mount, like in the video.

* Insert the new mount, making sure the keyed tab is inserted in the key hole on the engine pad.

* Slowly lower engine.

* Check that the passenger side engine mount is properly seated. If not jack up engine very very slightly to remove weight and position passenger side mount and lower.

Start to finished took less then 2 hours.

Rear Mount

* The top nut is accessible without removing anything. Using a long extension and swivel adaptor loosen the top engine mount nut
IMAG0040.jpg
* Using a ¼ 14mm socket and extension insert between the frame and sway bar. I had to slide the socket around some before it slide through, because the fit is very tight. If your socket is a tad thick try using a thick screw driver and pry the swag bar enough to fit through.

* Place a 2x6 under the bell housing like in the video and lift until the mount can be removed.

* Install new mount and lower engine, ensuring key tab is placed correctly

* Install lower engine mount bolt and tighten

* Install upper engine mount nut and tighten

* Now install top strut, fan shroud, plastic turbo, and tighten passenger side engine mount
